MSME and NSIC Registration

MSME/NSIC/SSI REGISTRATION

MSME Registration / Udyog Aadhaar Registration in India

Overview of MSME Registration

MSME Registration, also known as Udyam Registration, is an initiative by the Government of India to support and empower micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). It is administered by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and is essential for businesses seeking to access government incentives, subsidies, and exclusive schemes.

Launched on October 2, 2006, MSME registration provides official recognition to small-scale industries (SSI), enabling them to gain financial support, infrastructure benefits, and improved market competitiveness. This registration is available to both the organized and unorganized sectors in India.

Why MSME Registration Matters

MSMEs are the backbone of the Indian economy. According to government data:

  • They account for 95% of total industrial units
  • Contribute 45% of the country’s total manufacturing output
  • Generate over 50% of India’s exports
  • Produce over 6,000 types of products
  • Employ millions across rural and urban India

The World Bank also recognizes MSMEs as vital contributors to emerging economies like India. Registering under MSME helps businesses gain visibility, financial access, and a competitive edge.

Updated Classification of MSMEs (Effective July 1, 2020)

As part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Government revised MSME definitions to ensure wider eligibility and support:

The updated definition applies uniformly to both manufacturing and service sectors, simplifying compliance under the MSMED Act, 2006.

MSME, Udyog Aadhaar, and SSI – What’s the Difference?

  • MSME Registration: Grants recognition to micro, small, and medium enterprises to access schemes and benefits.
  • Udyog Aadhaar: A 12-digit registration number formerly used as a quick MSME identifier.
  • SSI (Small Scale Industry): An older term often used interchangeably with MSME, primarily for small manufacturers.

While the procedures are similar, it’s recommended to complete both MSME and Udyog Aadhaar registrations to avail the maximum benefits.

Step-by-Step MSME Registration Process (Udyam Portal)

  1. Visit the official Udyam Registration Portal
  2. Enter Aadhaar and PAN details
